Smitty’s Delivery Cart - New Goal
And I have been accused of having a distinct familial resemblence to a certain man-made Frankenstein critter from Olden Days. Be that as it may, I am a sixty year old kid who has been married happily to the same wife for almost a quarter-century bless her tormented soul! We have three grown kids, five grand kids, two dogs, and a Dodge pickup truck I call 'Baby. A writer of speculative fiction. But really, it doesn't matter. I'll read just about anything. Writing, however, revolves around the four genres mentioned. Like tasting vanilla pudding without much vanilla.
Clones of clones. Gone, it seems, are the writing styles found in writers like Raymond Chandler or Dashiell Hammett. Every writer since who has played in this genre has copied, in one way or another, their styles.
They brought a life to their words, animating their characters with a living, breathing presence. Today's writers of this genre go for fast paced action, unbelievable plots, and damn little description. So my goal is to blend the modern with the old; bring more 'color' back into the art of writing--to stimulate the imagination, yet leave free enough room for each reader to paint that verbal portrait all their own.
Join me in this endeavor. Let us be stalwart heroes and walk the dark alleys and back streets of murder and mayhem together. Or soar into galaxies unknown in search of adventures unparalleled. Call me… confused. The Positives : 1. I liked the character of Smitty and there were flashes of real promise for him to bloom into an engaging noir badass. I liked most of the story settings, and think that each of the pieces could become a very good read if given some time to breathe. The writing was fine, and I think Mr.

Stateham has the talent to make this character and these stories sing. However… The Negatives : Most of these revolve around the fact that each piece is only 2 to 3 pages long. That was completely lacking here. This was like reading flash fiction, but without any intense, immediate emotional wallop that such stories are intended to create e.

To elaborate for clarity sake and not merely to bash , my problems can be broken down into 3 main categories, all relating back to the brevity of the work. Gripe 1 : There is no emotional anchor to hold you to the story. It just means being wrapped up in what your main character is doing. Here, the stories are so short that there's no time to develop a shred of interest regarding who Smitty is killing, why he is killing them, or whether you supposed to to feel one way or another about it. There's simply no drama, no atmosphere, which is vital to this kind of gritty work. You hate the bad guy, root for the good or less bad guy and become involved in their fate.

Not so here. It's all over so quickly that there is nothing of which to grab hold. At the beginning of the story, Smitty is a regular guy who suffers a massive betrayal and decides to become a hitman for hire. Okay, I can accept that. Background like this is important and should not be ignored.
I have a great willingness to suspend disbelief, but I need a modest lifeline to help me get from point A to point B. Gripe 3 : The stories have no beef. As I mentioned above, there are positive aspects to the story that I think could be enhanced with some additional pages.lirilotxi.tk

I just think the brief, lightning quick format for the story was the wrong choice for this kind of tale. View all 10 comments. Dec 05, Werner rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Noir and hard-boiled crime fiction fans. Shelves: mystery-crime-fiction , short-stories. Note, Sept. However, since neither of us are with that publisher any longer, I felt that restraint was no longer necessary; so I've assigned a star rating accordingly.
This work is actually not a single short story, but a seri Note, Sept. This work is actually not a single short story, but a series of self-contained vignettes that show the formative moment of the title character, and give us a feel for the dark figure that he develops into. We're not given a lot of background on our protagonist here, but we are shown that he's a reasonably normal guy who's subjected to a psyche-destroying betrayal by his beloved wife and his own brother. Psychologically and spiritually shattered, he walks away from his whole existence; and when we meet him next, he's already transformed himself into a professional killer for hire, and a very competent one.
Between them, in the four sketches of distinct events that follow, he racks up a pretty impressive body count.
